They had a large room that gave on Montgomery Street, and between it and the hall a totally dark bathroom where a bead of gas burned in a round white globe. Ella Crabtree, Robert's Bostonian wife, was tired from her seven days in the rocking train, and to her the strange city, the blowing, gritty dust of the summer sunset, looked ugly and cheap. But Bob was in good spirits. He breathed his native air again and he liked it. Various men on the train or in the hotel had recognized him, and he was elated and excited at getting home. His business experience in Boston had not been very successful, and he half-hoped now that some chance would prevent the necessity of his returning there, but no one knew that. He could say with perfect truth that he was "representing Sewall, Scott and Forster," the Boston cotton merchants, for his wife's elderly brother had intimated that a commission business modestly established on the coast might be a good thing for the old cotton firm. Bob was a big man, with an expansive, genial manner, and a hearty, often affected, laugh. His own family had alternated between thinking him a remarkably clever and an amazingly simple person. He had an air of being intimately acquainted with big affairs and important persons, yet he actually held only an underling's position. After the dinner, selected from a list written in a flowing hand with green ink upon a gilt-edged card, Robert and his wife walked about the streets for awhile, and Robert showed Ella the old cable cars on Sutter Street, with their rattling "dummies" attached, and the more modern type of cable cars that filed up...

I absolutely LOVE this book. I have a small print copy and wanted a Kindle copy and ordered it back when it was available on Kindle. Boy, it sure was messed up. Whole sections were put in the wrong place, paragraphs were way out of order, there spelling mistakes throughout the entire book. The lack of any apparent editing totally ruined this lovely story for me. I gave it five stars because the book deserves five stars, it is a wonderful novel full of irresistible characters. It is one of those stories that you will want to read again and again. But buy the book and skip the Kindle version. Now I have to go squint at my old small print copy because I want to read it again.

Certain People of Importance Kathleen Thompson Norris 9781230309934 Books Reviews

This lengthy family epic about an early California pioneer family is illuminating as a social history of early California gold rush pioneers, but it is also quite tedious. Kathleen Norris rarely writes a tedious book, and certainly there are numerous plot points, as the various members of the family grow up, court, marry, give birth, and die. However, she has wrapped this book in a biting description of the lives of women at the time. The lives of some characters paint a grim picture of the wearing down of women by child-rearing and housework, contrasted sharply with the lives of their husbands. Other female characters are shallow and superficial, and their dreary conversations, patronizing behavior towards their daughters, and utter failure to see the reality under their noses is almost unbearable for the reader. While there are a few - very few - lively and lovable characters, the majority are shallow, insincere, misled by platitudes, and mired in sentimental sensibilities. Even the title becomes ironic by the end, as the characters are only "people of importance" in their own view. Norris does not usually write social satire, but in this book, her commentary on her characters is scathing. Read it for its accurate social portrait, read it as an indictment of women's lives at the time, but don't read it for a lively tale. Any other Norris book will be better for that.
